Hamburger SV suffered a bitter setback in the promotion race against newly promoted 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Hamburger SV suffered a 2-3 defeat against 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday (October 23, 2022). The promotion candidate (25 points) missed the chance to draw level with leaders Darmstadt (28) and remain in third place after their third winless game in a row.

Promoted Magdeburg, who arrived penultimate in the table, landed an immensely important victory and climbed to 15th place. Coach Christian Titz, who once failed at Hamburger SV, had set his team tactically brilliantly and celebrated a successful return to the old place of work.

Mo El Hankouri shocked Hamburg with an early goal (11th) for the guests: After Ransford Königsdörffer lost the ball, the Dutchman used a precise template from Baris Atik.

The strong Atik scored the second Magdeburg goal after the break (51st), again after a deliberately played counterattack.

Hamburg’s coach Tim Walter then shook his team up with a triple substitution, with success: Substitute Laszlo Benes initiated the goal through Königsdörffer (58th).

120 seconds later, the shot from Robert Glatzel, who was also new to the game, landed as a pinball ball in the net for the supposed equalizer. But referee Harm Osmers took the goal back after studying the video images because Königsdörffer is said to have touched the ball and was just offside – a tricky decision.

The HSV then remained powerful, but unlucky. Magdeburg made better use of its chances: Julian Rieckmann made the preliminary decision with the 3:1 (88 th ), Hamburg’s 2:3 by Tom Sanne in added time came too late.
