Madrid police ahead of ‘high-risk’ games with English fans

Madrid (AP) – The police in the Spanish capital Madrid are preparing for high-risk games between the English football clubs Chelsea and Manchester City in the Champions League against Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

Because with the guest teams, thousands of English fans are also expected, reported the sports newspaper “AS”. Around 300 police officers plus around 1,100 security guards from the Spanish clubs should prevent riots from occurring. There are also forces from civil protection, the city and the Red Cross.

In both encounters, the second leg of the knockout stage is about a place in the semi-finals. After the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge, Real are relatively confident about the game, which is expected to attract 1,850 English fans. Atlético, on the other hand, has to tremble after the 0-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. 3,600 British fans are expected to arrive here for Wednesday’s match.
