Macron announces “very quick” clarification

After the organizational chaos at the Champions League final, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a transparent and “very quick” investigation into the events surrounding the Stade de France in St. Denis.

“What the President wants … is for light to be shed on what really happened, in full transparency and very quickly,” Macron’s government spokeswoman Olivia Gregoire said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

In addition, Macron expressed complete confidence in Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who had been heavily criticized for the police action. “Gerald Darmanin is an interior minister who enjoys the full confidence of the President of the Republic,” said Gregoire.

Darmanin publicly announced on Monday that the “main cause” for the delay in the final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was “a massive, industrial and organized fraud involving counterfeit tickets”.

Before the game, there had been a great crowd behind the entrances to the corner reserved for Liverpool supporters. The police also used tear gas.

Darmanin said the actions of the authorities, who reacted very sensitively against the Stade de France during the international match of the DFB-Elf not only since the terrorist attack in 2015, had “prevented deaths”.
