Lutz Pfannenstiel has been working at St. Louis City for five years, building the club. Now the German has to clear his post.

Lutz Pfannenstiel is no longer sports director at the MLS-Club St. Louis City SC. After almost five years in office, the 52-year-old was released, as the club announced on Monday.

The decision is made in a sporty, difficult phase: St. Louis is currently in the penultimate place in the Western Conference. Most recently, the team lost 2: 3 against the Vancouver Whitecaps – the decisive goal fell through a converted penalty from Thomas Müller in added time. Roman Bürki stood in the goal of St. Louis.

Pfannenstiel has been in office since summer 2020 and was part of the club structure of the club, which was then founded at the time.

Club President Diego Gigliani said: “These decisions are never easy, and with the legacy that Lutz built here during his time, he will always be part of the expanded city family.” He also emphasized Pfannenstiel’s commitment and the importance of his work for the first season of the club: “From the beginning, Lutz showed real passion and commitment to this project, and the basis he created was crucial for the historical first season of the club.”

For the time being, Gigliani and the technical director John Hackworth take over the tasks of the exempted sports director. There are currently five German players in the St. Louis squad.
