Professional soccer player Luis Diaz from Bayern Munich celebrates a goal in the Bundesliga game at Union Berlin

As of: January 31, 2026 6:20 p.m

Every year at the sports show the best presents come after Christmas. The goal scorer of the year is awarded. This time gold goes to Munich, to Luis Diaz.

When almost half a million people take part in a vote, it must be about something truly meaningful. And the goal of the year award is actually one of the most traditional in German football and the spectators and users of the sports show had the choice.

Exactly 482,775 football fans cast their votes and the question of who will be the 54th goalscorer of the year has been answered. Luis Diaz from FC Bayern Munich wins the election with his “mad goal” against Union Berlin, for which he gets 103,000 votes. For a long time he was in a neck-and-neck race with second-placed Luka Vuskovic from Hamburger SV, who got around 91,000 votes with his “half Scorpion kick goal”. Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich came third with their “surprise goal” against Italy (approx. 73,000 votes).

Incomparable Goal

Diaz’s goal is one of those goals where, as a football fan, it doesn’t matter which team it was scored for. It is so breathtaking and spectacular, so beautiful that it leaves your mouth wide open. You don’t have to be a Bayern fan to think what the Colombian showed in the game against Union Berlin is simply great. Even the specialist department for beautiful goals at the sports show cannot remember a goal of the month that was even remotely similar to Diaz’s.

But first things first: First, the Colombian international goes after a failed pass, just barely reaches the ball with the tips of his feet, shoots it as it slides from the goal line, turns towards the goal while lying down, stands up in a single, fluid movement, looks briefly and finally shoots the ball from an almost impossible angle into the long, right corner of the goal. Unbelievable! A goal that belongs in the top 10 of the most beautiful goals in TdM history and an absolutely worthy goal of the year 2025.

Legendary goals of the year

Diaz’s “mad hit” is one of a number of legendary goals of the year, such as Günter Netzer’s “volley-free kick blast” in 1973, Klaus Fischer’s textbook overhead kick in 1977, Daniel Simme’s “unstoppable solo” in 1984, Jürgen Klinsmann’s double volley overhead kick in 1987, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s long-range overhead kick 2013, Kammlott’s handstand heel goal in 2015, Lazaro’s Scorpion kick goal in 2020 or Harry Kane’s “Kung Fu header goal” in 2024.

This is the eighth goal of the year for Bayern Munich in 55 years. Only the national team won more gold medals at the TdJ (twelve in total).
