It has been known for some time that the omikron variant of the virus, which has been dominant for months, generally makes people a lot less ill than the delta variant that predominated before. Some people end up in hospital after infection, but ICU admissions are less common.
The number of corona patients has increased in nursing wards. On balance, 140 patients were added in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid patients on nursing wards to 2051. This figure has now fluctuated around 2000 for about two weeks.
LCPS makes no distinction in the figures between people who are so sick of a corona infection that they end up in hospital and patients who were admitted for another reason and then tested positive for the virus. Both groups must be cared for in isolation from others, so the pressure on care is equal, the center argues.
