Lots of smoke after major fire in waste mountain in Waalwijk, NL-Alert sent

A large fire raged in a waste pile of a waste processor on Van Hilststraat in Waalwijk on Friday evening. The fire and the extinguishing work caused clouds of smoke that could be seen in the distant surroundings. An NL Alert was sent because of the smoke, but it was withdrawn not much later.

The fire broke out at half past six and was extinguished around half past eight. The fire raged in a mountain of waste in a large concrete container. The jet-black plume of smoke coming from the container could be seen in the distance.

Bystanders saw the black smoke on the industrial estate and called the emergency services. Meanwhile, bystanders intervened by moving a shovel and a crane away from the fire. The fire brigade was quick to extinguish the fire.

White smoke
When extinguishing the smoldering remains, a lot of smoke was again released. A reporter from Omroep Brabant spoke of ‘a dense low white fog’ that was in the far surroundings.

The fire brigade advised local residents to switch off ventilation systems and close windows and doors.
