Lots of opportunities but no goals in Venlo at VVV against FC Volendam

For the second time this season, league-leader FC Volendam has drawn 0-0. In Stadium De Koel in Venlo, both teams had more than enough opportunities to score, but the ball wouldn’t go in. The post stood in the way of a goal several times.

In the opening phase, ex-AZ player Richard Sedlacek had to be substituted after he ended up wrong after a sliding. The VVV player was carried off the field on a stretcher. After that FC Volendam picked up excellently with many opportunities. Robert Mühren, in particular, could have scored, but the club’s top scorer did not have his sights sharp. The striker still managed to find the net, but the assistant referee saw that Mühren was offside.

Volendam’s midfield (Oristanio, Walid Ould-Chikh and Deul) played strongly, which meant that trainer Wim Jonk’s team had the match under control. Nevertheless, the home team also had opportunities in the first half. Rayan El Aslak tested goalkeeper Barry Lauwers, who replaced the sick Filip Stankovic, with a low shot.

Opportunities back and forth after rest

Even after the break it was a lively and fun game. FC Volendam went on the hunt for the winning goal, but hit the post. Bilal Ould-Chikh swung from the right and saw his ball bounce off the aluminum. VVV was also very close to a goal. Joeri Schroijen came in from the left and lashed out. The ball went through the inside of the post behind Lauwers over the goal line.

Also in injury time, Volendam had an ultimate opportunity to take three points to Noord-Holland. Boy Deul headed from close range into the hands of keeper Delano van Crooij: 0-0.
