Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schlotterbeck are continuing to negotiate a contract extension. According to Lothar Matthäus, BVB would be willing to give the central defender an exit clause.

There is still no white smoke rising around the Borussia Dortmund club premises, discussions about an extension with Schlotterbeck are ongoing. The 26-year-old is tied until summer 2027. BVB made it publicly clear several times that they absolutely wanted to retain the defense chief on a long-term basis.

“He definitely wants to have the exit clause after the World Cup in place, in the hope that he will be able to play his way into the limelight again through the World Cup, with a success for the German national team as a regular player in central defense, so that in the end he may have the opportunity to go to an even bigger club – with possibly higher appreciation than he gets at Dortmund. And that, I think, is still being discussed a bit,” TV expert Matthäus commented on the poker on Sunday on “Sky90”.

“And I know that Dortmund would be willing to give him this release clause,” added the 1990 world champion.

Timely decision at BVB?

Sports director Lars Ricken revealed before the 2-0 win at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday that talks had resumed after the international break. “The relationship of trust between Nico and the club is 100 percent there,” emphasized the BVB boss on “Sky”.

“We won’t wait weeks again until we make the next appointment,” Ricken also announced, wanting to speed up the exciting personnel issue.

“I had a good conversation with Lars and Ole [Sportdirektor Book, Anm.d.Red]. We are continuing the discussions this week. Then, I don’t think it will be long before I make a decision,” said Schlotterbeck himself after BVB’s success in Stuttgart.

He could “of course imagine staying here. Nevertheless, all discussions have to work and we hope that we have good ones this week,” said the central defender.
