Matthew brings Ter Stegen into play at Top-Club

After the commitment of Joan García, FC Barcelona has an oversupply on the goalkeeper position. In addition to Wojciech Szczęsny, DFB star Marc-André Ter Stegen is also under contract with the Catalans. It is currently uncertain whether the long -time regular keeper still has a future in Barcelona.
Barça sports director Deco explained to the newspaper “La Vanguardia” after the García deal with regard to the strokes: “I don’t have to talk to him. My duty is to put together the best possible team for the coach.” The ex-professional ter Stegen basically showed the door.
Lothar Matthäus describes the situation for Germany’s number one as “uncomfortable”. In his Sky column, the world champion writes that Ter Stegen had come back well after a long injury and continued a goalkeeper in the world class category. García is also nine years younger than the ex-Gladbacher. Barcelonas is right to build on a younger goalkeeper in the future who also gets less salary.
He did not want to criticize the handling of Ter Stegen, because other clubs would also act in this way. In this context, Matthew also said: “If you as a player no longer get your trust because you had an injury because you have reached a certain age and someone else has the better future prospects in your position in the eyes of the club, many clubs leave their players a bit left.”
Matthew does not believe that Hansi Flick is to blame for Ter Stegen’s situation. He could imagine that the trainer had spoken out internally for the keeper. “Why should a trainer be against a very good goalkeeper? Flick used the Stegen Steg at the end of the past season in the Spanish league. This shows that he has confidence in him,” said Matthew.
However, the 64-year-old brings possible new employers for Ter Stegen. Galatasaray Istanbul is one of several options. The club made its ambitions clear by buying Bayern star Leroy Sané, playing in the premium class in the coming season.
The six Champions League representatives from England also throws Matthew into the ring. They all have no goalkeeper who was so strong that the jetty does not pose a reinforcement for them. Matthäus emphasizes a top club. “I don’t know what Manchester City is going, but I think that you are not so satisfied with Ederson,” he writes. “I think Ter Stegen could certainly be a goalkeeper for the ‘Citizens’ for the next three or four years.”
