As a coach at FC Bayern you are always spoiled for choice. This season, the record champions’ squad is again full of stars who are pushing their way into the first eleven. However, record national player Lothar Matthäus advises coach Thomas Tuchel to have a fixed axis in his starting line-up.
“There are some players who are always on the field and have to be set: Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich,” said Matthäus, listing the players he believes are indispensable in “Sport Bild”. “These are players who are not replaceable for me,” he made it clear.
Conversely, there would only be one place left in FC Bayern’s offensive alongside Musiala, Sané and Kane. According to Matthäus, two of the three established top players Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry always have to be on the bench.
Not an easy situation for the coach, who has to live with dissatisfied protégés and somehow keep them happy.
Jamal Musiala a hardship at FC Bayern
One of the toughest cases in the FC Bayern squad recently was Jamal Musiala. Despite appealing performances, the youngster often only came into play as a joker, which could allegedly have a negative impact on the planned talks about a contract extension.
“Jamal Musiala is 100 percent part of it,” said Matthäus about the list of possible regular players in Munich.
The 62-year-old added: “I don’t see it as having to be Musiala OR Müller. You can easily integrate them into the starting line-up with two.”
A nod to coach Tuchel, who has rarely lined up the two together so far. In his preferred system there is only room for one man at ten, and in recent weeks Müller has been slightly ahead.
It is not known who Matthäus would trust in defense at FC Bayern.
