32 years after it was recorded, the song “Baby Doll,” which Prince composed and for which Kylie Minogue wrote the lyrics, has finally been released. Albeit as a quasi-leak on YouTube, on the “New Paisley Generation” channel. An official release of the radio number has not yet been announced.
Prince: “Baby Doll”
Prince and Kylie Minogue met in 1992 after his concert at London’s Earls Court. He was on the “Diamonds and Pearls” tour to promote the album of the same name, with hits like “Gett Off,” “Cream” and “Money Don’t Matter 2Nite.” Prince and Kylie met backstage. They understood each other. He then invited her to his Paisley Park in Minneapolis. Prince finished the music for “Baby Doll,” then wrote to her, “Where are your lyrics?”
Good question. The now leaked version contains lyrics that Prince sings but were composed by Minogue. So it’s not a duet. But at least a cooperation. Still, even with Prince as the sole singer, you can easily imagine the duo slinging at each other in this song.
Maybe “Baby Doll” will be on the ‘Love Symbol’ reissue
Prince is said to have sent the demo to her, with guide vocals, but Minogue hasn’t been able to sing anything yet. She also pointed out that her label allegedly had no interest in releasing “Baby Doll”. Minogue told “BBC Music” that she didn’t want to think about a dispute with Prince’s estate, which has set strict rules about what can see the light of day. Either way, it would have been a way for them to gain a foothold in the American market. Kylie was pretty much out in 1992.
Since “Diamonds and Pearls” was released in 1991 before “Baby Doll” was created, the song was probably not included on the deluxe reissue of Prince’s last major global success. It is therefore conceivable that the track will be included in the re-release of “Love Symbol”. The record was released in 1992 and was originally supposed to be released in a double pack with the “Diamonds and Pearls” reissue.
