Problems for former NBA star Paul Pierce, arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after being found asleep at the wheel on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles on Tuesday, as reported by the Police. California Highway Patrol officers said several lanes of the highway were closed while they investigated an unrelated multi-car crash that occurred just south of Lankershim Boulevard around 10:34 p.m. “When travel lanes reopened, officers saw a Range Rover SUV stopped in the travel lane south of the crash site,” a CHP news release said. “When officers approached, they found the driver, later identified as Paul Pierce, asleep at the wheel.”

He was then arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after evident signs of impairment. Pierce was arrested at the CHP office in central Los Angeles, police said. After the news spread, Pierce wanted to have his say on social media, sharing a post in which he published a photo taken in the car that same evening. He explained that he was stuck in traffic for over 45 minutes and fell asleep due to tiredness, not alcohol.

Pierce played in the NBA for 19 seasons, 15 of which were with the Boston Celtics. He played briefly with both the Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Clippers. He graduated from Inglewood High School in 1995, before going to the University of Kansas. He was selected 10th overall in the 1998 NBA Draft, appeared in 10 All-Star Games and won an NBA championship in 2008. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
