Lorena Miraballes Kukurian invites us to discover a different Uruguay to complement the kilometers of its amazing beaches – PNT

The season is coming and there is an Argentine public that is loyal to Punta del Este. What walks can tourists take that make this vacation something different?

Well, look, even though we are a country with a small territorial area, you will be surprised by everything we can find near Punta in neighboring and surrounding departments that have to do with the enjoyment of nature and our flora and fauna or the delight of good and homemade gastronomy along with varied walks. Places to visit not only for those who come on vacation but for those who decide or have already decided to settle.

Many times I have heard Argentine tourists take the day to get to Chuy and shop and sometimes they stop by to visit some point on the Rocha coast (our department with the most protected areas). La Paloma, La Pedrera, Punta del Diablo, Cabo Polonio or Fortaleza de Santa Teresa are well-known and chosen places.

But within it there are other interesting rural tourism options to spend a day full of recreation and relaxation. There are several rooms to go for lunch and taste our best meats, roasts and wines and enjoy “copadas” snacks as you would say, with breads, cakes, jams and homemade recipes, while doing hiking activities, horseback riding, bird watching. birds, boat rides, even visiting some of them and close to Laguna Castillos, the largest ombú reserve in the world, with trees that date back several centuries.

And if we are willing, we can do a few more kilometers and reach the department of Treinta y Tres and there see the Quebrada de los Cuervos and the Sierras de Yerbal (municipal park and also a protected area) with abundant vegetation, falls and waterfalls. There you can camp, picnic, etc.

Let’s now go to the department of Lavalleja (one of my favorites) for all the good energy coming from its mountains. Perhaps it is a curious fact, in the area of Aguas Blancas and 400 meters above sea level is the only Spanish-speaking Buddhist temple, it is even rumored that the American actor Richard Gere has visited it. The place is wonderful with spectacular views of the mountains. Personally, I had the opportunity to do three weekend retreats with lamas who have arrived from Brazil. Visits can be made during the day with lunch included.

Also in the same department and near its capital Minas, you could visit the Salto del Penitente (whose waterfall is 60 meters) with the possibility of having exquisite lunch menus in its restaurant, ziplining, rappelling, etc A very picturesque and charming place even for some very mystical people is Villa Serrana: silence, calm, birdsong, lakes, lush vegetation, caves, hiking through the valley of the thread of life or the Arequita hill.

I do not want to fail to mention the Ute Vacation Park in Cuchilla Grande, a beautiful place for recreation and Salus Park in Sierra de la Coronilla, which includes about 1,300 hectares of mountains, mountains, bushes and grasslands, with its emblematic Fuente del Puma , Cerro del Águila of 300 meters, with games for children, inn, etc.

How about something from the Florida department? In 2015, when I was organizing walks with affinity groups… colleagues, travel companions, friends, I met a very traditional and historical ranch “San Pedro de Timote” (declared national heritage) on Route 7, km 143, Cerro Colorado is the oldest in Uruguay and where all the field activities we have been mentioning take place.

San José is also a place not so far away where you could visit very nice ranches.

Finally, Canelones, our other neighboring department, where these possibilities also abound and where the famous so-called “Wine Route” is located, which is a thematic tourist circuit included in the municipality of Las Piedras and neighboring municipalities and framed within the so-called “Metropolitan Wine Pole.” . The wine tourism wineries are basically located on the axis of Route 5 and 48. And then I will say, welcome to Uruguay and its best wines!

For those who want to visit Punta del Este this season, what is the best time to book accommodation and get the best prices?

Advance planning is always the best option and I will explain why. It is true that many owners, when they begin the first consultations, speculate and expect overvalued prices and tell you “there is time to go down” and many potential tenants who wait just at the last minute and play at auctioning values with the risk of not finding what they want, as happens many times, especially in the period of greatest demand in the spa (last days of December and first days of January). But there is a group of owners who already know what income they basically obtain in the different periods of the seasons, whether or not they can make some adjustment and then from the start they do not skyrocket their values and do not speculate with it “there is time to go down.” New and modern properties with or period amenities but updated in a very good state of maintenance and equipped.

So if you already have the vacation date, I will tell you that September – October is the best time to book the rental because you will find these properties that I mentioned available without having to stress out with last-minute searches.

What expectations are there for this season?

Expectations are good. Especially because last year and in the month of January the season was fundamentally excellent. It is expected that it could be the same or better. Obviously this year in particular we are going through this period of suspense due to the elections in Argentina that will be defined shortly. Despite this, rentals for all profiles are already being made and there are some owners who have already rented their property for the entire season. Properties that I mentioned before and that already have their clientele and decided to secure their rental and stay calm.

Well, you left activities and places for all tastes and for different weather conditions.

Very good season and until next time.
