The Romanian art treasures were stolen from the Drents Museum on January 25, 2025 after an explosion. This afternoon at 2 p.m. the Public Prosecution Service will provide explanations during a press moment in the museum.
Spectacular theft of millions in gold
Four very valuable Romanian art treasures were stolen during the art theft. This concerns the famous golden helmet of Coțofenești and three golden bracelets.
The pieces were part of the exhibition Dacia – Empire of Gold and Silver – and were on loan from the National Historical Museum of Romania. The estimated value is approximately 6 million euros, although experts say the cultural-historical value is much greater.
Burglars used explosives and struck quickly
A few days before the exhibition was to return to Bucharest, three burglars forced open a door of the museum with an explosive device. CCTV footage shows that they were outside again within a few minutes with the loot.
Suspects arrested, trial to follow in April
Not long after the robbery, several people were arrested, including three main suspects: Jan B. (21) from Obdam and Douglas Chesley W. (37) and Bernhard Z. (35) from Heerhugowaard.
They will stand trial in the court in Assen on April 14, 16 and 17.
