The Nigerian beats the competition thanks to the hat-trick in the Europa League final against Leverkusen. “Thank you all, an incredible feeling”
Atalanta’s 2024 is enriched with another single recognition: Ademola Lookman was elected best African footballer of 2024. The Nigerian born in 1997, playing for the Dea, defeated the competition thanks also, if not above all, to the historic hat-trick in Dublin and he won the award for the first time in his career, in his first ever nomination.

The competition was fierce, starting with Sehrou Guirassy (Guinea, Stuttgart/Dortmund), who averaged a goal per game last season (32 goals in 32 appearances), while they started further behind the star Achraf Hakimi (Morocco, PSG), goalkeeper Ronwen Williams (South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns) and African champion Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast, Brighton). Last year too, a Serie A player won, namely Victor Osimhen, who is Lookman’s compatriot.

After expressing his joy in the language of his country, Nigeria, he wanted to thank “the presidents, the coaches, the clubs, the fans for the support they have given me. For me this award is a blessing, for me, for the family, for my national team: to be recognized as the best African player is something incredible, I am very proud. In four years my world has changed: I want to tell the children and people who are watching me not to lose heart, to beat their fears and to be able to continue flying.”
