In a TikTok video, Lizzo blames social media algorithms for failed album promotion – and criticizes the fact that even fans don’t notice new music.
On Tuesday, May 12, Lizzo posted a video on TikTok detailing her struggles with social media algorithms. These allegedly made it very difficult for her to promote her new album.
“The algorithmic nature of social media today is ruining the music industry,” she said. “If your algorithm shows you content completely independent of its actual release date, the general public has no idea when music is actually released.”
No more chronological feed
Previously, the content was displayed chronologically. “Music marketing relies heavily on social media, but since the algorithm shows us content out of order, there’s actually no way to successfully promote an album even though everyone knows it’s coming out soon.”
To make matters worse, the majority of music marketing these days takes place online via social media. Modern algorithms make it difficult to promote albums effectively.
Even fans don’t notice anything
What bothers Lizzo the most: Even her followers don’t get the full benefit of her content and advertising for the new album.
She reports that she’s been accused of not promoting her album while appearing on podcasts, morning shows, Netflix specials and more. Yet many people don’t notice anything about it.
“The fans don’t even know that their favorite artist is releasing new music,” she emphasizes in the video.
She added that even she, as a singer, sometimes doesn’t notice when other musicians she admires release something.
She also wrote on her TikTok: “Don’t even get me started on how the algorithm is racist and fatphobic.”
However, at the end of the video, she reminded her fans that she doesn’t see this as a personal complaint, but rather wants to bring attention to it.
The singer will release her album “Bitch” on June 5th.
