Yesterday, Wednesday (April 27), the versatile rap and R’n’B artist celebrated her 34th birthday. Colourful, loud and fancy. Always with a strong shot of self-mockery, as has been known from her for years.
In a first video that she shares on her social media channels, Lizzo climbs out of a white and pink tower cake. With pale pink bouffant hair style, matching show gloves and silver accessories like Marilyn Monroe once did.
“ITS MY BDAY!!!!,” she writes in her post. “And this year I would like to give YOU a present: Secure my album “Special” in advance – and you have a head start of two days on the tickets of my upcoming tour! I love you ALL… Get your butt off and toast me; Infant!”
The included clip includes a short snippet of the song with pounding lyrics: “Is it your birthday, girl? – ‘Cause you lookin’ like a present – Is it your birthday, girl? – Let’s celebrate it/ Is it your birthday, girl – Make a wish, 11:11 – Is it your birthday, girl? – Let’s celebrate it.” Is there a follow-up track to Stevie Wonder’s popular song “Happy Birthday” on the way?
However, Lizzo leaves open whether this celebration number is really an upcoming song from Lizzo’s fourth studio album. In any case, the record has been announced for July 15th, the lead single is meaningfully called “About Damn Time”.
In a second staging, she serves a whole battery of cakes and then fights with a gold XL candle that doesn’t want to be blown out. She likes to do without birthday cards or gifts, says there. If there is “World Peace!” instead. And anyway. People should be more considerate and kind to each other, kindly: “Here’s to another incredible year. The constellation of Taurus has now begun!”
It wasn’t until the Coachella weekend that Lizzo made a surprise guest appearance with her UK show pal Harry Styles. The two duly hammered out the all-time classic “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. Lizzo also stood by his side with a taste for “What Makes You Beautiful” by Styles’ ex-band One Direction.
Her tour starts in September in the USA and Canada, in Europe she is expected next year.
