A blood-curdling murder mystery

Agatha Christie knew better than anyone how to write the perfect murder mystery. After The Mousetrap comes Christie’s greatest story, Murder on the Orient Express , to the theater. When a murder is committed on board the Orient Express, the blood-curdling search for the perpetrator begins. The question is: is the viewer on the right track? On a dark winter evening, the famous detective Hercule Poirot boards the express. Just after midnight the train suddenly comes to a halt due to a heavy snowstorm and the next morning one passenger is dead. All travelers seem to have an alibi, but who tells the truth when nothing is what it seems?

Trapped on the train, with the murderer hiding among them, the passengers turn to Detective Poirot. Will he be able to unmask the killer before he strikes again? Playwright Ken Ludwig, who previously worked on The three Musketeers and Crazy for You , adapted the thriller, with the famous Poirot, into the ultimate whodunnit. With a cast consisting of Remko Vrijdag, Lone van Roosendaal, Gerrie van der Klei and more top actors, various characters are portrayed that keep the audience guessing who the perpetrator is until the end. There will be an introduction before the performance. After the performance in Assen on Thursday the cast travels to De Tamboer in Hoogeveen to repeat the show again on Friday.

Assen – Theater DNK, Thursday 8 p.m. (introduction 7 p.m.), 41.50 euros

Sharp vocals from Skating Polly

Skating Polly was founded in 2009 by stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse. Together they have transformed their musicality into a sound they have called “ugly pop”: disobedient, subversive and melodic. With the addition of Kurtis Mayo on drums, the band collaborates with icons such as X’s Exene Cervenka and Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson. On their double album Chaos Couty Line the band candidly shares their most challenging and emotional experiences.

Numbers like Hickey King and I’m Sorry For Always Apologizing explore themes of power in relationships and issues of identity and unhealthy obsessions. The songs range from noise rock to art punk or piano-driven power pop. What all songs have in common, however, are Skating Polly’s characteristically sharpened vocals.

Buffalo Nichols makes a musical trip around the world

From the moment Buffalo Nichols fell in love with the guitar, he kept asking himself the same question: how could he bring the blues of the past into the future? Through a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a world tour through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. “Part of my intention, to make myself more comfortable with my music, is to put more black stories into the folk and blues genres. When I listen to this record, I want more black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs,” explains the guitarist, songwriter and singer.

That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album – and first solo blues signing in nearly 20 years from label Fat Possum – which consists largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas. He will be at TakeRoot Presents on Friday.

Groningen – SPOT/Der Aa-Theater, Fri 8:30 PM, 15.50 euros
