Liverpool suffer setback: defeat at relegation contenders Bournemouth

Salah awards penalties

Liverpool FC slipped up again in the close race for the Champions League qualification places and suffered a surprising defeat in the Premier League shortly before the duel at Real Madrid. At AFC Bournemouth, threatened with relegation, the team of coach Jürgen Klopp lost 0-1 (0-1) on Saturday, also because Mohamed Salah missed a penalty in the second half of the game.

Barely a week after the outstanding 7-0 home win in the league against Manchester United, Liverpool also got off to a good start in Bournemouth. However, the supposed opening goal by Cody Gakpo after 15 minutes did not count because of an offside position. Bournemouth finally took the lead through Philip Billing in the 28th minute.

After conceding a goal, the visitors from Liverpool were mainly dangerous in set pieces, but missed the equaliser. After a handball from Adam Smith, who maneuvered a shot by Diogo Jota over the goal with his arm, Liverpool’s record goalscorer Salah (69th) took the penalty and shot the ball wide to the left of the goal.

Liverpool missed the chance to move past Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table at least for the time being and to conquer the desired fourth place. The next task for Klopp and his team is much more difficult than Bournemouth. On Wednesday, the Reds have to play in the round of 16 second leg of the “premier class” at Real Madrid. Liverpool lost the first leg 5-2 at home.
