Liverpool FC celebrates Florian Wirtz’s debut goal. Reds legend Dietmar Hamann remains skeptical for the time being despite the DFB star’s goal redemption.

In the 1585th competitive minute, Wirtz scored for his new employer for the first time. The international played a decisive role in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 home win in the Premier League against bottom-placed Wolverhampton.

Has the knot finally broken? “I hope and wish that it gives him a boost. However, I remain cautious. Liverpool are tormenting themselves against the bottom of the table like in previous games. It’s obviously not right in the team. That’s not Wirtz’s fault, but it’s his problem,” Reds legend Hamann told “Bild”.

Liverpool FC is currently in fourth place in the Premier League. The English champions have been unbeaten in seven competitive games.

Wirtz is relieved, Völler is happy too

“It was a great feeling on the pitch with the fans, I was very happy and still am,” said Wirtz after his debut goal on Saturday: “I was confident that one day I would score a goal. I wanted to start scoring goals and providing assists earlier, but it is the way it is and I have to accept it. I just know that it will come and I’ll try to keep it going.”

Liverpool FC will face newly promoted Leeds United in the Premier League on New Year’s Day at Anfield Road.

DFB sports director Rudi Völler commented on “Bild”: “I was very happy for Florian in front of the TV. When you change with such advance praise and things don’t go well, it’s not easy. But I knew: He’s not giving up! He’s getting more and more used to the Premier League. That will help us have a great World Cup.”
