Schmadtke was most recently the managing director of VfL Wolfsburg for four and a half years. At the end of January he gave up his post and actually retired. Now he is drawn to the traditional English club on the Mersey. The newspaper wrote that a longer cooperation with Liverpool FC could not be ruled out either. At the same time, the LFC wants to intensify the search for a new sports director. Michael Edwards left in 2022, successor Julian Ward will stop at the end of the season.

Liverpool will miss out on the Champions League this season. This is another reason why the team is facing a major upheaval. Schmadtke should now design it together with Klopp. Six contracts expire this summer, and the departures of Roberto Firmino, Naby Keïta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner have already been announced. The quartet once cost 139 million euros, with Milner signed on a free transfer.
