Interesting to follow were of course the clashes between Virgil van Dijk and Brian Brobbey. The defender and the striker met a few times in the first minutes, with Van Dijk always staying upright and Brobbey, despite a questioning look, was not given a free kick. The attacker then decided to look for more Ibrahima Konaté in the matches.

It took a long time before the first chance came at Anfield Road. Robin Roefs introduced the Liverpool opportunity with a poor kick that was picked up by Ryan Gravenberch. In the end the goalkeeper was lucky that Florian Wirtz could not print. At the other, Alisson Becker didn’t look very convincing with Trai Hume’s shot, but the crossbar saved the day.
Mohamed Salah
Slot was not satisfied and brought Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian started on the bench, just like last weekend against West Ham United, but this time he was allowed to come on. Cody Gakpo was the victim. Despite the home team developing a lot of pressure, it was Sunderland that hit the post via Omar Alderete’s header.
Slot’s team then escaped, but halfway through the second half they scored. Van Dijk lost the ball and then Chemsdine Talbi’s shot fell in. Despite the pressure, Liverpool had difficulty creating opportunities, but the first real opportunity of the second half was successful. After a good interception from Curtis Jones, Florian Wirtz remained very calm and scored via Nordi Mukiele. The Sunderland back was eventually credited with the goal.
Sunderland seemed to take the win for a while. After a great kick from Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs, Wilson Isidor could only get at Becker, but Federico Chiesa saved on the line.
