Without the injured Ryan Gravenberch, Jeremie Frimpong and top signing Aleksander Isak, Liverpool’s start was dramatic. After just a few minutes the ball was in the net when it was headed through and Dango Ouattara scored with a kind of half bicycle kick.
The Reds had a lot of the ball, but did not get much further than a great chance for Florian Wirtz, who shot just wide. Brentford struck a second time just before half-time. After a beautiful through ball from Mikkel Damsgaard, it was Kevin Schade who cut off his man well and finished. The halftime score seemed to be 2-0, but in extra time it was Milos Kerkez who appeared in front of the Brentford goal and scored.
Mediocre second half Liverpool
But Liverpool did not leave the dressing room with a boost. In fact, it was Giorgi Mamardashvili who kept his team going on a few occasions before Brentford were awarded a penalty following a Van Dijk foul. Igor Thiago got behind the ball and made it 3-1. Liverpool was toothless for a long time, but suddenly, a few minutes before the end, Mohamed Salah blasted home the visitors’ second goal. However, a draw was no longer possible.
