Zelensky previously said the mobilization was a “very sensitive issue.” But he now admits that there is a “shortage” of troops for operations during the counter-offensive and that military headquarters has proposed mobilizing another 400,000 to 450,000 people.

The Ukrainian president states that this is a “very large number” and that more arguments are needed to support that question. Officials will now develop a plan.

Zelensky began a tour of Western countries last week to advocate for more military and political support for Ukraine. But he failed to convince Congress in Washington to approve $60 billion in aid, while Hungarian leader Viktor Orban in Brussels blocked some 50 billion euros in aid for Kiev.

These setbacks on the diplomatic front follow a disappointing counter-offensive launched by Kiev in June.
