Goal for USA, 1-0 by Matt Coronato

Lane Hutson brings the disc under pressure to the goal from the inside right position. The hard rubber bounces to Matt Coronato in the left faceoff circle. This one shoots out of the turn and has some luck. Two Czech skates are in the game. And from Michal Jordán’s skid the play equipment jumps into the goal.

And so the game runs pretty smoothly. It goes back and forth cheerfully – without the teams really going to work in a targeted manner. So there are no highlights.

After the US boys initially set the tone, the Czechs are gradually finding their way into the game and creating the first offensive actions. There are still no significant chances to score.

15:20

So now the new edition of last year’s small final is running, which went to the Czech Republic 8:4 in this arena.

15:19

Casey DeSmith from the USA and Karel Vejmelka from the Czech side start between the posts. US striker Mikey Eyssimont is suspended after checking his knee in today’s game against Sweden.

15:17

Denmark’s Mads Frandsen and Briton Liam Sewell are to ensure order on the ice in Tampere’s Nokia Arena. The two umpires are assisted by linespersons Tarrington Wyonzek from Canada and Emil Yletyinen from Sweden.

15:12

With regard to the special teams, the Czech Republic can stand up to the USA. The rate in the power play is even identical (33 percent). With eight overtime goals scored, the Czechs are even number 1 in the tournament. When it comes to penalty killing, the Americans are just ahead – with 81 versus 76 percent. Surprisingly, both teams are exactly the same in terms of penalty times at 59 minutes.

15:07

So the World Cup third of 2022 must be considered an outsider today. The Czechs, as six-time world champions (since 1993), have much greater merits to show for themselves. The last title in 2010 was followed by two more bronze medals before a dry spell without precious metals followed, which only ended last year.

14:58

Almost two weeks ago, the Czech Republic started with a 3-2 win in a brother duel against Slovakia and then solved the mandatory task against Kazakhstan (5: 1). They lost 4-3 overtime in Rīga to co-hosts Latvia. As expected, Slovenia (6-2) and Norway (2-0) were in control. But when it came to the well-known opponents of Group B, the Czechs conceded bankruptcies against Switzerland (2:4) and Canada (1:3) and slipped down to fourth place.

14:49

With this grandiose march-through, the Americans rose to become a tournament favourite. After a long time, the team seems to have what it takes to make a big hit again. After the last of the two world championship titles in 1960, there were at best bronze medals at world championships – seven in all. The last third place dates back to 2021. Twelve months ago they finished fourth in the World Cup.

14:40

As the only undefeated team in the tournament, Team USA picked up 20 of a possible 21 points and thus secured victory in Group A. Only at the end of the preliminary round against Sweden, the US boys didn’t have enough 60 minutes, but they still won after a good one and a half minutes in extra time. With 34 goals scored, the North Americans are by far the measure of all things at this World Cup. Defensively, only Sweden conceded a goal less (7).

14:30

Welcome to the Ice Hockey World Championship! In the title fights of the runner cracks, the knockout phase begins. Today is the quarterfinals. From 3:20 p.m. CEST, the USA and the Czech Republic, among others, will have to deal with each other.
