Live ticker Kansas City Chiefs – Detroit Lions (NFL 2023/2024, 1st matchday)

03:21

Rice on the rise?

Rookie Rice draws attention again on the last play before the two-minute warning, takes off to the right and runs a whopping 25 yards after a nice pass from Mahomes. The rookie, who also just scored the touchdown, is definitely making a name for himself here in his first competitive game.

03:20

Chiefs stop Goff

In the third attempt, Goff hardly has a chance and is pulled to the ground by the Chiefs’ pressure. This time the distance is too far for a fake punt and so Mahomes has another chance to take the lead before halftime. We are close to the two-minute warning.

03:17

Lions apply pressure and force the punt

Detroit puts Mahomes under good pressure and forces the quarterback to make a hasty pass, which then fails to find receiver Gray. The punt goes to the 40-yard line and gives the Lions good field position.

03:14

The running game makes the difference

The Chiefs still don’t look particularly comfortable offensively. The running game in particular can’t contribute much at the moment. Significantly, the leader in this category is Mahomes, who has to run again because he lacks alternatives. Then Kansas City takes a timeout before an important 3rd down deep in their own half.

03:13

The Chiefs win the ball

03:09

Turnover!

The Chiefs defense sets an exclamation mark! On 3rd & 10, the ball goes to Jones on the right, but the veteran’s equipment slips out of his hands while running and tackling. The home side are quick to think and pounce on the leather and turn away triumphantly. Incidentally, it is the first fumble in Jones’ career, who has been playing in the NFL since 2012.

03:08

Snap failed

Bitter! Goff can’t control the snap, can still secure the leather, but loses 11 yards. The Lions get it back straight away via Gibbs, but now it looks more like a field goal.

03:06

The Lions offensive line dominates

The Lions’ running backs keep breaking through, which is also helped by the fact that the guests’ offensive line has so far simply cleared everything that stands in its way. Thanks to these good blocks, the other players keep finding gaps.

03:04

How does the Chiefs defense respond?

Goff is now back on the field and the ease with which he moved his offense earlier is unlikely to have pleased the host. Let’s see if Reid and Co. set up their defense a little differently now. However, St. Brown then comes flying in again, crosses in his usual dynamic manner and jumps to catch a long pass from his quarterback for a first down. The Lions are already deep in the Chiefs’ half.

03:02

A rookie scores the Chiefs’ first points

02:58

Extra point by H. Butker (Chiefs) to make it 7:7

H. Butker’s extra point attempt is good!

02:58

Touchdown by R. Rice (Chiefs) to make it 6:7

Rashee Rice

And so the touchdown can no longer be defended. Mahomes gets good protection from his line and when he gets so much time, he just finds a taker. Here it is rookie Rice who runs free deep in the end zone, is served safely and celebrates a perfect debut in the NFL.

02:54

Is the Chiefs machine running now?

After the short quarter break, Kansas City comes back focused. Even though the offense clearly lacks the presence of the injured Kelce, the Chiefs are currently close to scoring a touchdown of their own in the red zone. And once again it is Mahomes who recognizes the gap and quickly takes off and runs 14 yards.

02:52

Mahomes takes over himself

Well, suddenly Mahomes is under a lot of pressure in front of his own fans and quickly takes matters into his own hands at the center line when no receiver is free and runs for the first down.

02:50

Beginning of 2nd quarter

The ball is back in play. We continue with the second quarter.

02:50

End of 1st quarter

Who would have thought? The Lions show courage and take a little of the champion’s edge in the first quarter and rightly lead 7-0.

02:46

First touchdown by a German

Nice story from a German perspective: St Brown is one of the few German NFL stars and recently announced that he wanted to really attack this season and become “immortal”. With this start he is certainly on the right track. In any case, hats off to a man from whom we will certainly hear a lot more. And with the Lions, the coach’s courage paid off to the fullest.

02:46

The first points of the season go to the Lions

02:44

Extra point by R. Patterson (Lions) to make it 0:7

Riley Patterson

R. Patterson’s extra point attempt is good!

02:42

A. St. Brown (Lions) touchdown to make it 0:6

Amon-Ra St. Brown

The answer: St. Brown! The receiver runs a nice dig route, crossing from left to right, and Goff fires a real rocket perfectly into the barrel of his receiver, who then becomes unstoppable towards the end zone.

02:41

David Montgomery fuels himself another time

David Montgomery in particular wears down the opponent in this phase and repeatedly breaks through with powerful and dynamic runs, bringing his team into the red zone. Can the guests now gild their drive with a touchdown or will the first points be scored with a field goal?

02:39

The drive has potential

The reward for the courageous action: the drive is going well. The Lions mix running and passing games and have already arrived deep in the opponent’s half. The whole thing started with, among other things, a nice pass to St. Brown, certainly the best receiver on the Lions side. But the Chiefs currently have no means of combating the running game.

02:37

Campbell the Fox!

Does the Lions coach have courage? But hello! The Lions are two yards short of a first down within their own 20-yard line. The coach fakes the punt, but his team lets the attempt play out. And that works against the surprised Chiefs! Hats off, you have to bring that to this situation first!

02:35

Almost the interception!

We’ve talked about the pressure on Goff and here the quarterback almost makes the first mistake against the Arrowhead’s mood. A pass is dangerously deflected and almost intercepted. Then the quarterback is under pressure on 3rd & 7 and gets the pass to the man, but it’s not enough for a first down.

02:33

Mahomes also left the field again

After that, the Chiefs can’t go any further. Mahomes is put under excellent pressure twice and even brought down once. Goff gets the next chance with his offense.

02:33

The Lions are stopped early

The Lions’ first drive can’t set an exclamation mark, nor for the offense. After three moves it’s over. Afterwards, Mahomes shows how it can be done better and, after a running game, serves his receiver McKinnon brilliantly for a first first down.

02:23

Game start

Kickoff in the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions. The game is running.

02:19

It will start soon!

This sets the stage for what will hopefully be an eventful start to the new season. We are looking forward to it and will be back with the kickoff!

02:14

Can the Lions build on a strong season?

The Lions are definitely an unpleasant opponent. Last year, as a surprise team in the NFC, they narrowly missed the playoffs and of course they want to build on that. They strengthened themselves well in the offseason, especially in defense, and are certainly among the playoff candidates. There are a few question marks in offensive depth, especially at receiver. It remains to be seen how well Geoff and Co manage to establish the passing game as a weapon. Especially since Arrowhead is certainly one of the most intimidating arenas for a visiting quarterback. On the other hand, Lions coach Dan Campbell is known for being fearless and being able to prepare his team for such big games.

02:09

The champions are not without worries

By the way, the champion is not going into the duel today as the big favorite. They had a decent pre-season, but star tight end Travis Kelce was recently injured and will not be able to play today due to knee problems. There are also contract disputes with defender Chris Jones, who didn’t show up for training recently and isn’t in the game today either. This raises the question of how the weakened offense and defense will present themselves. However, Mahomes certainly didn’t have the greatest talent on offense last year, but he always finds ways to put his teammates in the spotlight.

02:03

Goff a points guarantee against Mahomes?

The NFL could have presented the viewer with a blast at the beginning of the season and scheduled the Super Bowl rematch Chiefs – Eagles, but they decided on the slightly less prestigious option and postponed the exchange of blows between the final opponents until November. If you look into the past, we could still be in for a real blast today. The Chiefs are always good for points anyway and the last meeting between quarterbacks Goff, then with the Rams, and Mahomes ended in a wild game 54:51.

01:53

The champions on the way to dynasty?

The keen football fan had to wait a whopping 207 days. On February 12th of this year, the Kansas City Chiefs led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes beat the favorite Philadelphia Eagles and continued to diligently build on their sports legacy with their second title. Some people already believe that the youngster can rise to the level of Tom Brady, but in order to do so he would have to build a real dynasty together with coach Andy Reid in Kansas City. The potential is there, but despite the successes that have already been achieved, it is of course still a long way off. Today you first have to solve the Lions compulsory task.

01:47

It finally starts again!

The wait is finally over! The NFL is back and started the new season tonight. At 2:20, the champion takes on the honors of kicking off against the Detroit Lions. We will be there live for you in the usual manner!
