Grass is Niemeier’s favorite surface
“I love playing on grass,” Niemeier recently said about her sensationally strong performance at Wimbledon. “It’s a special surface, it suits my game, I love it.” On the fast underground, where strong servers have an advantage, the German obviously feels very comfortable.

Parallel German Banging
In the parallel match, which started at 2 p.m. German time, Tatjana Maria is also fighting for the quarter-finals (also in our live ticker). So far it’s going well, she’s ahead in the first set with a break. So it is a simultaneous thrill for German tennis fans: with the experienced Tatjana Maria on Court No. 1 and the young Niemeier on Center Court in a few minutes. Middle Sunday
First Sunday at Wimbledon and it’s being played – unusual? So far, the so-called “Middle Sunday” was free of play, i.e. a rest day. With a few exceptions due to weather-related delays, this was always adhered to. The 135th edition of Wimbledon is now breaking with this tradition. Sunday was already scheduled in the tournament tree at the start of the tournament. Jule Niemeier has the historic pleasure of being the first player to open Center Court on “Middle Sunday” as usual…

Tournament Paths
On their way to the round of 16, the young German hopeful Niemeier caused a sensation, especially in the second round. In passing, she defeated the number two on the seed list, Estonian Anett Kontaveit, 6:4, 6:0 and threw one of the big favorites out of the tournament. It was even tighter against the Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko, against whom she gave a set for the first time on the “holy lawn”. (6:4, 3:6, 6:3). Today’s opponent Watson had a simpler program and hadn’t had to make do with a seeded player. Her closest match: In round one against Tamara Korpatsch from Hamburg (6:7, 7:5, 6:2). So now the next British-German duel follows – hopefully with a different outcome!?

Niemeier and Maria last German hopes
Since Sascha Zverev, the greatest hope for the title, is missing due to injury and Oscar Otte was knocked out against the great young talent Carlos Alcaraz despite a good performance throughout the tournament, there is no longer a DTB player in the men’s round of 16. And for women, too, the greatest hopes from a German point of view have already been eliminated: Andrea Petkovic in round one and Kerber in her third match. Others have to step into the breach: Tatjana Maria (in the golden late autumn of her career) and Jule Niemeier are stirring up the tournament to the delight of German tennis fans and both surprisingly made it into the top 16.
