Live ticker Germany – USA (Ice Hockey World Championship 2023 Finland/Latvia, Group A)

37

16:40

Soramies sniffs the double pack! Nico Sturm curves behind the goal, then serves Soramies in the slot and he pulls the trigger immediately, but only hits Casey DeSmith’s shoulder.

36

16:38

Team USA is now looking more and more into the slot. Anders Björk tanks up and fires just past the left from a few meters.

35

16:36

In a wild sequence, the Germans hold the disc several times with high stakes in the attacking third, but never really get it under control. Tiffels goes for a shot at DeSmith from behind but can’t outsmart the US goalie.

34

16:35

The Americans let the German team buy their nerve here for a long time, but are now slowly improving and getting more deals.

33

16:32

Germany is complete again! The US boys bring some cracking long-range shots on goal, but Mathias Niederberger takes everything away. At the back, the circle troop frees itself twice and is then allowed to fill up again.

31

4:30 p.m

Now, of course, it would be incredibly important not to fall behind again straight away. The Germans must now survive this outnumbered situation by all means.

31

16:27

Goal for Germany, 1-1 by Samuel Soramies

But before the man is outnumbered, there is equalization first! And that was really fast! Seider sends Moritz Müller on the right-hand side, who throws the disc at goal from the outside. Casey DeSmith bounces and Samuel Soramies is there to chase the rebound under the roof.

31

16:26

Maximilian Kastner

Minor penalty (2 minutes) for Maximilian Kastner (Germany)

Shortly before the end of the majority Kastner collects a penalty because he lets cloth jump over the blade. This means that Germany has to be outnumbered.

30

16:25

It almost seems as if the DEB troop’s goal took the wind out of their sails a bit. the fourth power play is the most benign to date and Casey DeSmith gets next to nothing to do.

29

16:23

Matt Coronato

Minor penalty (2 minutes) for Matt Coronato (USA)

Germany is allowed to have the majority again! Coronato had caught Wissmann again with the high stick. Will it finally work for the DEB in the fourth power play? A quick equalizer would be so important!

27

16:21

The North Americans’ lead is a little flattering on balance, but who cares? Germany had more and better chances but just didn’t score. Looking for a quick answer, Dominik Kahun fails at Casey DeSmith from a tight angle.

26

16:17

Ronald Attard

Goal for USA, 0-1 by Ronald Attard

Is that bitter! A penalty against Germany is indicated and the USA attack in six. Ronnie Attard then releases an actually harmless one-timer from the face-off circle, which would have clearly missed, but Kai Wissmann unhappily deflects the puck with his skate past Niederberger into his own goal.

25

16:17

Now the US boys are slowly coming in and letting the puck run well for a while. Niederberger defuses Alex Tuch’s Onetimer with the schooner.

24

16:15

At the back, the Germans can’t do much with a majority and are even lucky that no shorthanders catch themselves. Drew O’Connor breaks through and fails with his finish due to the outstanding reaction of Niederberger!

23

16:13

The DEB selection quickly forms up and Leon Gawanke unleashes one of his famous power play crackers, but fails to hit the target either.

22

16:12

Carter Mazur

Minor penalty (2 minutes) for Carter Mazur (USA)

It’s back to the power play! This time Mazur has to go down because he had the bat in his face at Wissmann. Does it finally ring?

22

16:11

Germany is back in full force and comes to the next opportunity. John-Jason Peterka serves Dominik Kahun, who just misses the box.

21

16:09

Beginning of 2nd third

20

15:57

third conclusion:
Germany got off to a strong start in the game against the USA, but remained without a goal in the first 20 minutes. The DEB selection fired a whopping twelve shots on goal and was also unlucky when Manuel Wiederer hit the crossbar. In addition, Justin Schütz and Frederik Tiffels missed promisingly and two power plays didn’t bring any profit either. The Americans only got four shots, two of which were extremely dangerous. Once the post saved, once Mathias Niederberger had to use all his skills. Overall, it was a very convincing performance by the German team in the first third, which presented itself as strong in running and fighting. All that’s missing is the reward. See you soon!

20

15:51

This time the Germans are initially difficult in the power play. Structure only comes in shortly before the end and it becomes dangerous. Maximilian Kastner and Nico Sturm poke against Casey DeSmith as much as they can, but the thing just doesn’t want to go in.

18

15:49

Rocco Grimaldi

Minor penalty (2 minutes) for Rocco Grimaldi (USA)

Next number! Grimaldi hits Seider from behind and has to go out for two minutes.

18

15:49

The DEB cracks work incredibly well against the puck and always recapture the game device. Now it’s Stachowiak who grabs the front line and wants to surprise DeSmith in the near corner. But that doesn’t work either.

16

15:47

Now Germany hits the linkage too! Manuel Wiederer takes the measure in the high slot and chases the hard rubber crashing to the lower edge of the bar. Only centimeters were missing for guidance.

15

15:45

Germany again! The odds are getting better and this time it’s Tiffels, also coming up from the left in front of DeSmith. De Munich takes a powerful shot and fires right into the US goalie’s hand!

14

15:44

In return, Justin Schütz fights for the disc in the neutral zone, approaches Casey DeSmith from the left and fails at Casey DeSmith’s schooner.

13.

15:43

The post saves for the DEB selection! A deflected shot by Alex Tuch hits the left post. Niederberger would have been beaten there.

12.

15:39

Germany shows a good power play, especially in the first 90 seconds and chases a few shots on goal in the person of Noebels, Gawanke and Wissmann. Casey DeSmith hasn’t been defeated yet.

10

15:35

Ronald Attard

Minor penalty (2 minutes) for Ronald Attard (USA)

Now the punishment is pronounced. Ronnie Attard brought down John-Jason Peterka and is charged with tripping. First power play for Germany!

10

15:35

Punishment against the USA is indicated and Germany is making a lot of steam with six. The DEB cracks keep the puck in front for a long time, but nothing comes out more than a shot at the side netting.

9.

15:33

So far it’s been going back and forth at a rapid pace. Germany is holding up well and has fired a shot more than the USA until the first power break.

8th.

15:31

Niederberger with the first strong save! After one of these turnovers, which Germany wants to avoid at all costs, Mikey Eyssimont goes to the goal alone, curves through the goal area and wants to put the puck in the corner of the catch, but Niederberger quickly pulls out the schooner and closes it off.

7.

15:29

Marcel Noebels is in the front row today alongside Dominik Kahun and John-Jason Peterka. The Berliner is now almost staged by his two colleagues for the first time, but doesn’t quite come close in the slot.

5.

15:27

Leon Gawanke signs up for his very first appearance on the Finnish World Championship ice with a degree. From the high slot, the 23-year-old fires into the right corner and at least forces an offensive face-off.

4.

15:25

After winning a disc, the US boys play it incredibly quickly and purposefully and are now bringing the first discs into the slot. So far, however, Niederberger has not had to intervene.

3.

15:23

Harold Kreis had previously asked his team to be even more compact at the back and block the zone in order to curb the Americans’ speed game. In fact, the DEB selection makes it incredibly tight in the back around its own slot.

1.

15:22

Here we go! Germany plays in black and white and starts with Mathias Niederberger in goal. Casey DeSmith guards the blue-clad guests’ box.

15:19

Dinner is served! The two teams have just stepped onto the ice in Tampere’s Nokia Arena and in a few minutes this preliminary round match between Germany and the USA will start!

15:12

In contrast to the German team, the USA got off to a perfect start. Last year’s third in the World Cup started with a very convincing 4:1 against defending champion Finland and then easily shot Hungary 7:1 off the ice. National coach David Quinn has a powerful squad of experienced NHL professionals and young talents with him again this year, striving for the first world title since 1933. With two-time Stanley Cup winner Nick Bonino and Alex Tuch, the North Americans have two really big names, especially up front.

15:06

Leon Gawanke is part of the German team for the first time today. The Winnipeg Jets defenseman has had a few days to acclimatize and is ready for his first game. Attacker Manuel Wieder is also in the squad today, with Daniel Fischbuch taking a break. Of course, the name Leon Draisaitl also circles over the DEB team. After his bitter playoff exit yesterday, the star of the Edmonton Oilers is only an option if at all towards the quarterfinals. Mathias Niederberger starts again today in the German goal.

15:00

The German team had the day off yesterday and had time to clear their heads after the first two bankruptcies. According to head coach Harold Kreis, that apparently worked. “The frustration was yesterday, today the mindset is different, today we’re looking ahead again,” the 64-year-old clarified in the run-up to the third preliminary round game. Nico Sturm sees room for improvement, especially on the offensive. “A little more traffic in front of the goal, a little more windows in the direction of the goal,” the NHL star wishes of the San Jose Sharks and also demanded: “We have to get a little dirtier.”

14:53

The DEB selection has only played two of seven group games so far, and yet they are already under a lot of pressure ahead of this duel with the USA. Because the German runner cracks kept up well against the two top teams from Sweden (0:1) and Finland (3:4), but ultimately didn’t record anything countable. In order not to be under too much pressure before the four games against the supposedly beatable opponents Denmark, France, Hungary and Austria, the first points should finally be scored today against Team USA.

14:50

Hello and welcome to the third group game of the German national ice hockey team at the 2023 World Cup! At 3:20 p.m., the DEB selection will take on the USA in Tampere, Finland.
