Medvedev wants second title

Daniil Medvedev will still remember his victory from 2021 well. The triumph at the US Open is his first and only victory at a Grand Slam tournament so far. The Russian has won 20 titles so far in his career. The strange thing is: He hasn’t been able to defend any of his victories so far. He achieved all 20 final victories at different tournaments. The 27-year-old didn’t go through the US Open quite as smoothly as his opponent today. Still, he never had to go the full distance. Christopher O’Connell, Alex de Minaur and Carlos Alcaraz each took a set from the world number three. The win against Alcaraz in particular will have given Medvedev a real boost. Similar to Djokovic, Medvedev is not the big fan favorite of American viewers. So it remains exciting to see who they will support more.

Revenge or repeat?

Novak Djokovic still has a score to settle with his opponent today. In 2021, the Serb only needed a triumph at the US Open to make the Grand Slam perfect. After victories at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, everything looked as if the now 36-year-old could also win the US Open. But Daniil Medvedev had other plans and won his first major victory in three straight sets. Djokovic no longer has a chance at the Grand Slam this year, but he still wants to win his 24th Grand Slam title. If you look at the tournament so far, there is a lot to be said for the new world number one. Except against his compatriot Laslo Djere, Djokovic never needed more than three sets. But he didn’t just make friends, especially against Ben Shelton, he once again antagonized the audience when he imitated the young American’s victory gestures.
