From the perspective of the reigning champions, the situation is still very relaxed despite the bitter defeat. The Eisbären still have three games to get a win against Adler Mannheim. However, two of the three remaining matches would take place in the SAP Arena in Mannheim, meaning that Serge Aubin’s men would only have one home game. However, the Berliners have been able to convince in the two previous encounters on foreign ice. The record champions prevailed 7:3 and 5:1 against Mannheim, meaning that three of the previous four duels were won by the away team.

Last Thursday’s game will definitely bring back memories for fans of both teams. In the 2012 final series, which was still played in a best-of-five format, the Adler Mannheim led 5-2 in game four in the middle of the final third, before the Eisbären not only equalized the game, but also scored the winning goal in extra time. Just like this year, a match puck was blocked before the Berliners won the championship around 14 years ago. It remains to be seen to what extent the success has given Mannheimers a tailwind. Will history repeat itself and the team with its back against the wall can win the next match after a late comeback victory, or will the capital city team use their second opportunity to secure the championship title?

The Adler Mannheim were able to force the fifth game in the best-of-seven series after a comeback victory in the Uber Arena. After 52 minutes, the reigning champions were still leading with a 3-1 lead before the Berliners gave up the game in the following minutes. In the final minutes, Mannheim equalized with goals from Zach Solow and Alexander Ehl before narrowly missing the decision in regular time as the puck only crossed the goal line after the siren. In extra time, however, it was Luke Esposito who kept the final series alive.
