Germany not yet ready for recognition Palestinian state
Germany has repeated to find it too early to recognize a Palestinian state. However, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that immediately work should be made of a two -state solution, in which Israel and a Palestinian state co -exist.
“For Germany, the recognition of a Palestinian state is more likely at the end of the process. But this process must now start,” the minister said before his departure to the United Nations in New York. France is expected to recognize a Palestinian state there. Earlier, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Portugal already did that.
Germany is considered a mainstay of Israel, but has become increasingly critical of the Israeli performance in the Gaza Strip. “What the region now needs is an immediate cease-fire, considerably more humanitarian aid for people in Gaza and the direct, unconditional release of the hostages,” said Wadephul.
Most countries already recognize a Palestinian state worldwide. Recognition by France and the United Kingdom has a diplomatic weight, because those countries are permanent members of the UN Security Council and also have Veto Recht there. The United States blocked a Palestinian attempt in the council last year to become a full member of the United Nations.
The US reacted annoyed to the recognition of a Palestinian state by Western allies. “Our attention remains focused on serious diplomacy, not on theatrical gestures,” said a spokesperson for the US Department of Foreign Affairs. “Our priorities are clear: the release of the hostages, the safety of Israel, and peace and prosperity for the entire region, which is only possible without Hamas.”
