Major Russian airstrike on Ukrainian capital Kiev and energy facilities

Russia carried out a large-scale attack on Ukrainian energy facilities early Friday morning, Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk reported on Facebook.

“Energy experts are taking all necessary measures to limit the negative consequences,” the minister wrote on Facebook. “As soon as security conditions allow, energy experts will begin assessing the consequences of the attack and carrying out recovery work.”

A journalist from the AFP news agency reported several explosions and the sound of drones above the Ukrainian capital Kiev. According to the head of Kiev’s military administration, drones and missiles were used in the airstrike. The attack caused a fire in a high-rise apartment building in central Kiev.

The mayor of the Ukrainian capital reports eight injuries, five of whom are in hospital. Power has been cut in eastern parts of Kiev.

Russian drones also hit several targets in the southeastern city of Zaporizhia. A seven-year-old boy was injured in an airstrike. He later died in hospital, a regional official said.
