Michael van Gerwen was the first Dutchman to qualify for the semi-finals by beating Raymond van Barneveld (6-5). He will soon compete against Gian van Veen, who sent Danny Noppert home. Van Gerwen won 6-5 against Van Barneveld and thus avoided a big surprise in Den Bosch. Barney took a 2-5 lead, but was ultimately unable to win. Mighty Mike achieved an average of 101.15 and was 60 percent on his doubles. Van Barneveld achieved an average of 97.91 and a finish percentage of 62.5 percent.
“I think we played a very entertaining match for the crowd. That is not unimportant, but what is more important is that I finished the match winning, even though it was very difficult,” Van Gerwen said afterwards. Gian van Veen easily defeated compatriot Danny Noppert in his quarter-final. TheFreeze came back from 5-0 to 5-3, but that was it. Van Veen will meet Van Gerwen later tonight in the semi-finals.
On the podium, Van Veen and Noppert had a small conversation towards the end of the competition. The latter thought that Van Veen was tapping his arrows the whole time, but that turned out not to be the case. “He also thought that I did that… something is wrong,” said Noppert, who does not know exactly where the sound came from.
