Mid-term conclusion:
Manchester City leads 2-0 at half-time against Burnley FC. The guests started surprisingly well and even had a slight chance in the first half hour. However, Lyle Foster and Nathan Tella could not take advantage of their opportunities. In contrast, City goal machine Erling Haaland struck twice in the 32nd and 35th minutes by passing Alvarez and Foden. Afterwards, Manchester City found more security, while Burnley had to shake themselves for the time being. Shortly before the break, however, the visitors came close to the goal in person from Ian Maatsen. The hitherto shaky Ortega parried the shot under the bar but strong. The lead for Manchester City is certainly a bit lucky at this level, but ultimately that is exactly the difference between a real top team and the brave Burnley.

Anass Zaroury plays a wonderful pass from the left to Ian Maatsen, who pulls towards the goal and can finish from ten meters, inside left position. Ortega, however, has his fists up quickly enough after the powerful shot under the bar.

Official stoppage time (minutes): 1

44

19:32

Nathan Tella loses the ball while dribbling against three people and then tactically slows down Phil Foden with a bump. However, he gets around a yellow card. Foden’s subsequent free kick from the inside left flies into the penalty area at high speed, but no player can get to the sharp cross.

19:29

After all, the guests are approaching the city gate again. After a pass from Vitinho from the center to Anass Zaroury, he has plenty of space on the left. The offensive player pulls into the middle and tries a right-footed shot from 23 yards out. However, this slipped over his slippers, so that the ball easily went five meters past the goal.

40

19:27

Burnley looks a little unnerved, which is not surprising given the goals conceded. Now it’s up to the men in the black jerseys to get through the last five minutes before the break at least unscathed.

38

19:26

The game really took a surprisingly quick turn in the last few minutes. Burnley FC did almost everything right in the first 30 minutes and even had more chances. However, there seems to be no herb against the force of nature Erling Haaland. It would be a sensation if the underdog came back after this double low blow.

19:22

Tooor for Manchester City, 2-0 through Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland destroyed what was actually an outstanding first half hour from Burnley in a tremendous freezing cold. The starting point is Kevin de Bruyne, who plays a wonderful through ball down the left flank to Foden. He sees Haaland in the middle and serves him perfectly. The Norwegian casually chips the ball halfway up into the left corner against the direction of the Burnley keeper.

Erling Haaland

Tooor for Manchester City, 1-0 through Erling Haaland

As if out of nowhere, the Norwegian goal giant hits the spot. After a tee shot by Ortega, Haaland first wins the header duel against Al-Dakhil, which gets the ball to Alvarez. Haaland makes the decisive run straight down and receives a perfect through pass from Alvarez. Goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell comes out determinedly, but the City attacker is there first and effortlessly slides the ball past the keeper.

30

19:18

Manchester City are still losing the ball too much, even if they were able to curb the second division’s offensive urge again. So far, however, absolutely no class difference is recognizable. Burnley has even had the better chances so far, even if Haaland just had a small header opportunity in the penalty area after a Foden cross.

27

19:15

Manchester City tried twice from distance but both de Bruyne and Alvarez’ shots from 20-25 yards out were blocked by a Burnley defender.

25

19:13

Phil Foden is down after Vitinho stepped on his foot near the halfway line. With luck, the Burnley professional gets past a yellow card.

23

19:12

Burnley FC has really caused a sensation here so far! Beyer plays an outstanding pass into the alley to Tella. He wants to finish ten meters from the goal, but is then prevented from finishing by a monster tackle from Stones. The following corner brings danger again. Ameen Al-Dakhil gets a header at the left post, but his attempt is blocked.

20

19:07

Burnley again! 18 yards from goal, Nathan Tella receives the ball in a half-right position. The offensive player tries a low shot to the far corner, but Ortega is down fast enough and can parry the ball to the side.

18

19:06

The first major opportunity belongs to the guests. Ortega makes an almost momentous bad pass that Foster can absorb. The striker has the chance to aim for the empty goal with a lob from 30 meters, but doesn’t dare. The striker moves in the direction of the goal, but is run out in time by Rico Lewis.

16

19:04

After a bad pass from Alvarez in midfield, Nathan Tella can pick up speed for a moment, but fails with his transfer pass to the right wing to Kyle Walker.

14

19:02

A diagonal ball from Laporte in the direction of Mahrez, who started on the right, goes completely wrong and ends up in touch. So far, the hosts have not come together much, even if de Bruyne almost found the previously pale Haaland with a pass.

12.

19:00

Stefan Ortega is felt to be the man with the most ball actions of all those involved. This is not because he has to defend himself against an attacking storm from the guests, but more because City has no ideas in the game structure, gets into trouble again and again and has to play back to the goalkeeper.

10

18:58

The guests are still very high and are already attacking the back four of Manchester, who are therefore always looking for their way back to Ortega. However, the Premier League giants are yet to make any mistakes in their passing game, meaning Burnley’s efforts have so far been in vain. Phil Foden has just taken a free kick in his own half after a foul by Connor Roberts.

7.

18:55

Beyer cannot clarify a cross from Foden far enough. This gave Rodri a shot from a central position 23 meters from goal, but the Spaniard’s shot was blocked by Jóhann Guðmundsson.

5.

18:53

Vitinho slipped near the corner flag on the slightly rain-soaked pitch, giving Phil Foden the ball. However, the Englishman cannot control the ball and his demands for a corner kick are not heard either.

3.

18:51

As expected, the Skyblues took over from the start and pushed the ball to each other. However, Burnley is by no means hiding and aggressively pressing on it. This puts Ortega in distress, who plays a rather unfortunate pass to Laporte, who was quickly scrambled by Foster. However, the ball remains with the hosts.

1.

18:48

The game is on! The hosts play in the light blue jerseys as usual. The guests from Burnley are dressed all in black.

18:44

Manchester City and Burnley FC meet today for the 108th time. In a direct comparison, the Skyblues lead with 53 wins, 24 draws and 30 defeats. The mood of the City fans is already good and the fans from Northern England who have traveled with them are also really busy. The players are just stepping onto the lawn and soaking up the atmosphere in the wide circle.

18:25

Burnley coach Vincent Kompany has made three changes to his team since beating Hull City away. Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Ameen Al-Dakhil and Lyle Foster replace goalkeeper Aro Murić, defender Hjalmar Ekdal and captain Ashley Barnes. The visitors are expected to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

18:09

With his line-up, Pep Guardiola shows that he takes the opposing team seriously. Accordingly, the top stars like Haaland, de Bruyne, Rodri and Dias are there. With 18-year-old Rico Lewis, there is only one less well-known actor. As usual in the cup, Stefan Ortega guards the goal, whereas Ederson, Aké and Gündogan get a break. Bernardo Silva is not in the squad, but with Foden, Alvarez and Mahrez there are numerous offensive artists in the starting XI who can support de Bruyne and Haaland. Tactically, a 3-5-2 system should be planned.

17:58

Manchester City are in strong shape as the recent 7-0 Champions League win over RB Leipzig showed. The Skyblues have not lost the last nine competitive games and won the last five matches. Pep Guardiola’s men have knocked out Premier League leaders Arsenal FC en route to the quarter-finals.
