Amy Pieters was sorely missed this afternoon during the SD Worx team presentation. The cyclist from Zwanenburg has been in a coma with serious brain injury for more than a month. Sporting manager Danny Stam reacted to Pieters’ condition for the first time. “We hope for the best and our thoughts are with Amy, her family and friend.”

“There is actually no news to report since our last press release on Thursday,” Stam tells NU.nl. “Amy is stable, but not well. She is in a deep coma and there is not much improvement. Only when she wakes up can we give a prognosis for the future. I would like to tell more, but there is nothing more than this. We hope for the best and our thoughts are with Amy, her family and friend.”

The team of the Dutch champion is having a hard time with the reporting. “Everyone tries to give it a place and does so in their own way. All in all, there is a good spirit in the team,” continues Stam from Hensbroek.

Last month, the team was again at a training camp in Spain. “That was good, because in difficult moments you can give each other a hug or shed a tear together. The team is a small family, we are always on the road together. If something like that happens to Amy, it is very scary.”

Start of season

The cycling season really starts at the end of February with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Stam hopes his team is ready. “We will continue with our work which is cycling. Amy will also want us to ride as well as possible.”
