Litter remains a major problem

Across Flanders, four out of ten pieces of litter are cigarette butts, but when converted to volume, this mainly concerns cans, plastic bottles and other beverage and food packaging: 58 percent. Per inhabitant, an average of 2.7 kilograms of litter has been cleaned up in a year, and even 4.3 kilograms of illegal dumping. Flanders is therefore still far from meeting the litter targets, which is why it wants to introduce a system of deposits on cans, among other things, by 2025.
