Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda proposed lifting the state of emergency on the border with Belarus, which, with the consent of the country’s parliament, was introduced in early November due to the influx of illegal migrants from the neighboring country.

“I think that the state of emergency should be removed. This tool should be used in exceptional situations, and the migration crisis has now been resolved, ”the TV company quoted a statement from the president of one of the local radio stations. LRT

Nauseda added that if necessary, the state of emergency could be introduced again.

The state of emergency has an impact on the internal political situation in Lithuania. In October, the country’s parliament approved a constitutional amendment that introduces direct voting for mayoral elections. However, in accordance with the Lithuanian legislation, it is impossible to change the basic law in a state of emergency.

The first state of emergency in the history of independent Lithuania was introduced on November 10 amid the migration crisis. It operates 5 km from the border with Belarus, as well as in places of resettlement of migrants in the settlements of Pabrade, Medininkai, Kybartai, Rukla, Naujininkai district in Vilnius.

The state of emergency imposes restrictions on local residents (they cannot enter this territory without the permission of the State Border Service).

The situation on the border of Belarus with the EU escalated on November 8. Columns of refugees (mainly from the Middle East) tried to break into the European Union. After several days of clashes and negotiations between President Alexander Lukashenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the migrants left the camps at the border.
