Multi-instrumentalist and producer Nik West, 33, has released a new song, “Cotton Candy.” On Instagram, she lets her followers guess which two artists the song pays homage to – and the guess immediately seems to be right: Prince and George Clinton. “You have good ears!” West praises in the comments.

She then says in the comments column that the candy pearl necklace around her neck reminds her of her childhood, when she always ate such sweets and even wore them to school.

Nik West: bass player for Prince, Taylor Swift and Co

The bassist has worked with Prince, Dave Stewart, Bootsy Collins, Taylor Swift, George Clinton and John Mayer. Prince once said of the 30-year-old: “She has a great stage presence. She inspires me the way Sheila E. and Rosie did (Gaine’s) did.” She has appeared on the covers of a number of bass magazines, and portraits of her have also appeared in magazines such as Vanity Fair and ROLLING STONE.

She last played on German stages in November 2019 at the International Music Awards (IMA) in Berlin, when she presented an interpretation of the classic “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” together with gospel legend Queen Esther Marrow and the evening’s host, Billy Porter .

RS interview with Nik West

In March 2020, West released her album Moody, a collection of funk, rock and jazz tracks. They were implemented with Cindy Blackman-Santana, Lenny Kravitz’s drummer, and bass master Larry Graham, made famous through his work with Sly & The Family Stone. The record was produced by Narada Michael Walden, who oversaw style-defining albums by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. For this, ROLLING STONE spoke extensively with the musician: Nik West in an interview: How to dance on pedals.
