Florian Lipowitz’s high flight at this year’s Tour de France continues. Now the 24-year-old has climbed overall-and is only behind two superstars.

Florian Lipowitz took over third place in the overall ranking of the Tour de France. The German tour surprise finished in the victory of the Dutch Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadier) on the 14th stage with 1:25 minutes behind-and benefited from the exit of the previous third-placed Remco Evenepoel. Around 100 kilometers before the finish line of the Pyrenees stage from Pau to Superbagnères on the Tourmalet, the 25-year-old descended from his bike on Saturday.

Lipowitz is now the first pursuer of the leading Tadej Pogačar and the second Jonas Vingegaard. And has taken over the white jersey for the best young driver. However, the driver from the Team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe was hardly considered a chance for the overall classification of the tour on Friday: “If you are honest, Pogačar and Jonas (Vingegaard, editor’s note) are out of reach. But I think we definitely have good cards in the fight for third place.” These now look even better.

Lipowitz is 7:53 minutes behind defending champions and tour dominator Pogačar in the yellow leadership jersey and 3:40 minutes behind the Danes Vingegaard.

The top drivers should be spared on Sunday. After the demanding stages in the high mountains, the escape lovers smell their chance on the 15th stage. Before the second day of rest there are 169.3 kilometers between Muret and the southern French city of Carcassonne. Two climbs of the third and a medium-heavy in the second category invite outlier groups.
