A few days after Lil Poppa’s death, the official cause of death is known. The rapper, real name Janarious Mykel Wheeler, died on February 18th as a result of suicide. This was confirmed by the coroner’s office.
According to TMZ, the 25-year-old was involved in a car accident on Interstate 85 near Hapeville on the morning of February 18th. He then called his manager and the two arranged to meet in the parking lot of a nearby Hilton hotel. There, the rapper sat in his vehicle and spoke to her through the rolled down window. According to the local police chief, Lil Poppa pulled out a gun during the conversation, put it to his head and fired a shot. A police officer deployed on the hotel premises heard the bang, rushed to the car and immediately called the emergency number.
Rescue workers immediately took the musician to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 11:30 a.m.
Funeral service
The memorial service in Wheeler’s hometown of Jacksonville was marred by violence. As “allhiphop.com” reports, four people between the ages of 34 and 43 were injured in a shooting near the memorial event, including two women and two men. One person had to be treated in hospital, but there was no life-threatening condition. According to reports, between twelve and 15 shots were fired. However, there is no concrete information about the circumstances.
Lil Poppa: life and work
Wheeler was born in Jacksonville, Florida and spent his childhood there. At an early age he developed a passion for music – especially rap. He began writing his own lyrics and forming a personal style that combined introspective, emotional content with melodic trap beats. His breakthrough came in 2018 with the single “Purple Hearts,” which brought him his first national attention in the hip-hop scene.
In the years that followed, Lil Poppa consistently expanded his career. He signed with Collective Music Group, rapper Yo Gotti’s label, and released a number of successful songs.
