Lightning comeback and next Corona case with the DHB team

Lightning comeback for Christoph Steinert: The best German tournament goalscorer to date is allowed to appear at the start of the main round of the German handball team against Spain on Thursday evening (6 p.m. / ARD) despite his positive corona finding on Wednesday.

This was announced by the German Handball Federation (DHB) shortly before kick-off in Bratislava.

“The 32-year-old left-hander had received a weakly positive result in an additional PCR test arranged by the German Handball Federation on Wednesday. All tests carried out beforehand and afterwards were negative, so that the status ‘negative’ was also given when the laboratory management asked where the only positive test was evaluated, was confirmed,” says a statement from the association.

However, national coach Alfred Gislason will have to do without the help of his assistant coach Erik Wudtke against Spain.

Handball EM: Oliver Roggisch jumps into the breach

“The large number of tests within the past 48 hours gives Erik Wudtke a currently unclear picture,” said the DHB an hour before the start. Wudtke is replaced by team manager Oliver Roggisch.

The 49-year-old assistant coach will remain in the team hotel. DHB sports director Axel Kromer should be in close contact with Wudtke during the game “in order to be able to give additional input for the team, especially during the half-time break”.

Twelve players in the DHB selection have already been infected with the corona virus, but for the first time since Sunday the DHB was only able to communicate negative player results from its PCR tests on Thursday.
