During each performance, the Belfort itself becomes the narrator of his story. Eight centuries of history come to life. From the first stones in 1240 and the arrival of the Holy Blood to the establishment of the very first stock exchange, the flowering in the Burgundian era and the Bruges Metten. Some less beautiful episodes are also reviewed: persecutions, social inequality, the plague and the hidden sides of the city. The journey ends in today’s Bruges: vibrant, intellectual, tourist, economic, with the belfry as a symbol of tradition and innovation. “It is a visual time journey, introduced by the carillon, in which medieval grandeur and contemporary light spectacle merge,” says Pol van den Driessche, chairman of the 11 July comment.
