It is a great initiative: singles from both villages could register and for a small contribution they were treated to a four-course dinner and drinks.

The church of Oostwoud is attractively decorated on Christmas Day and between the chatter, the baked salmon is served by two volunteers who sacrificed half their Christmas to help. And as if it couldn’t be beat, a quiz follows after the main course, while singer Edith Numeijer performs Christmas songs.

‘No one should be alone’

Organizer Ed Bobeldijk looks pleased with it all. His wife Iris came up with the idea for Christmas dinner. “Our daughter is abroad and our son normally has to work at Christmas. Iris came up with the idea of cooking for single people, because no one should be alone at Christmas, she thought. I thought that was a nice idea.”

The announcement had an impact in Mid- and Oostwoud. Residents donated for this campaign and a lot of help also came from restaurants and suppliers. And – not unimportant: villagers quickly signed up. “For a moment I thought that my father-in-law had to sit at the table with only women, but in the end six men also came.”
