Li Qiang appointed as new Chinese prime minister at People’s Congress

Li Qiang, seen as one of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s staunchest supporters, was appointed as the new prime minister on Saturday. In a vote at the People’s Congress, he received 2,936 votes. Three members voted against and eight abstained. Li Qiang, 63, succeeds Li Keqiang, who had been prime minister since 2013.
