After only two match days, Bayer Leverkusen separated from coach Erik Ten Hag. Now a successor has apparently been found.

Football vice champion Bayer Leverkusen is apparently about the signing of Kasper Hjulmand as a new trainer. The report of the “kicker” and the “Bild” newspaper. According to “kicker”, there is a fundamental agreement between the two sides. The former Danish national coach should therefore sign in the coming days. According to the TV station Sky, there is even a complete agreement. Bayer will play the first competitive game after the international break against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday (8.30 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online).

Previously, several media had already reported that the Dane was the favorite for the successor of the early coaches Erik ten HAG. The Bild newspaper wrote on Monday by a meeting of Hjulmand with Leverkusen’s sports manager Simon Rolfes. This is said to have taken place in Düsseldorf last Saturday. “Now everything speaks for Hjulmand as a trainer,” it said in the article.

After his resignation as a national coach in the summer of 2024, Hjulmand is currently without a club, but still has a consultant contract with the Danish Football Association. According to media reports, this would have to be dissolved if it came to an agreement with the Rhineland.

Hjulmand had looked after the Danish selection at the 2022 World Cup and the European Championships 2021 and 2024-last year he was eliminated in the round of 16 of Dortmund against the DFB team. Previously, he worked as a club coach at FC Nordsjaelland, with whom he became Danish champion in 2012, and at FSV Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga (season 2014/15). His last commitment at the club level ended in March 2019.

Bayer had separated after only two Bundesliga match days of Ten HAG, who had started the legacy of master coach Xabi Alonso at the beginning of the season. Marco Rose, Edin Terzić or Postecoglou were also traded as successor candidates, Spanish media had also brought the former world-class striker Raúl into conversation. So far, Ten Hag’s ex-assistant has been running training.
