The former coach of FC Schalke 04 Domenico Tedesco has brought the Turkish top club Fenerbahce back on track. A few days before the duel against city rivals and league leaders Galatasaray, the Fener head coach also comments on Leroy Sané, who is on the rise.
On December 1st (6:00 p.m.), current second-placed Fenerbahce will welcome their big rivals Galatasaray to the city derby – an absolute top game in the SüperLig. After twelve games so far, Fener is in second place with 28 points and is still undefeated. Gala is the first to have one point more.
For Fenerbahce head coach Domenico Tedesco, in order to win the championship for the first time in eleven years, you need victories against the reigning double winner. The 40-year-old is also immediately aware of the expectations in the city, he now says in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
“You can tell that the fans are hungry for success. You’re approached on the street and people say: ‘We finally have to become champions again. We believe in you.’ I’m aware that if you work for such a big club, you should be successful,” said the former head coach of FC Schalke 04. And he also made it clear: “I don’t reject titles.”
Sane? “He hasn’t forgotten how to play football”
Two German stars, Ilkay Gündogan and Leroy Sané, have been under contract with big rivals Galatasaray since this summer. While Gündogan has been out since the end of October due to a thigh injury after a convincing start, Sané is currently on the rise after initial problems.
The right winger now has three goals and one assist in the league, and he was called back into the squad by national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the most recent international matches against Luxembourg (2-0) and Slovakia (6-0). In the massive win in Leipzig, he was one of the outstanding players in the DFB selection with two goals.
“I look primarily at our team – and not so much at what the other teams are doing. But my impression is that Leroy Sané is doing very well,” emphasized Domenico Tedesco: “That’s why I’m not surprised that he has returned to the national team.”
Sané has “not forgotten how to play football just because he is no longer at Bayern Munich,” emphasized the Fenerbahce coach.
