Lenny Kuhr breaks into The cut guest: ‘The long silence was broken’ | show

Lenny Kuhr had tears in her eyes Friday night when she heard a fragment of herself right after her voice problems. Özcan Akyol surprised in The cut guest the 73-year-old Eurovision winner with that recording. The long silence was broken. It could come out again.”

In 1993, Kuhr inexplicably lost her voice during a performance. She couldn’t even speak for weeks. She was even afraid that her voice wouldn’t come back at all. At first her voice was very thin and she thought that was her new sound, she tells Akyol. He then shows his guest a short fragment on which Kuhr sings.

“That was the first song I sang after the voice had come back a bit,” says a visibly moved Kuhr. “That is of course also the pain of not being able to sing. But also the breakthrough that it was suddenly there. The joy that although I thought the voice was not coming back, it was suddenly there again. That I could somehow express myself through music again.”

It is not the first time that the singer is moved by it. “It was a very nice moment. I was in a friend’s studio. At one point I didn’t know how to sing in front of a microphone at all. I stood there in front of that microphone and it took me a while to open my mouth to sing it.” She was then given a cassette tape to take home. ,,I played that in the car and I also cried. I’m just singing again. The long silence was broken. It could come out again.”

Kuhr – who still sings – has no longer suffered from such vocal problems. “I was never afraid that it would come back. I went through this process and you only have to do it once.”
