The hosts finished the first half 3-0 ahead with goals from Emil Forsberg in the 25th minute, Abdou Diallo in the 30th minute and Willi Orban in the 45th minute.
In the contentious second half, Hertha Berlin brought the situation to 3-2 with goals scored by Dodi Lukebakio from penalty in the 62nd minute and Stevan Jovetic in the 64th minute.
Leipzig won the match 3-2 as there was no other goal in the rest of the match.
Leipzig increased their points to 15 with this win, while Herhta Berlin remained at 8 points.
