New trainer found
Leicester City have Dean Smith as their new manager until the end of the season. The Premier League club announced this late Monday evening. Smith, 52, will be assisted by former Chelsea defender John Terry and Craig Shakespeare, who was assistant coach at the 2016 Sensations league title. The penultimate table, threatened with relegation, parted ways with the previous head coach Brendan Rodgers at the beginning of April.
Smith previously coached Norwich City, Aston Villa, Brentford FC and Walsall FC in his career. Most recently, Jesse Marsch, former coach of RB Leipzig, was the preferred solution for the 2016 English champions. After Marsch’s cancellation, according to several media reports, Rafael Benítez is said to be a top candidate for the post of coach from the new season. Benítez won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 and most recently coached Liverpool’s city rivals Everton.
Transitional Smith commented, “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to lead the team in these final weeks of the season. The challenge ahead is clear, but my coaching staff and I have faced it before and given the quality of this squad and the number of games left, it’s quite doable.” Club boss Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “On behalf of everyone at Leicester City I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dean to the club. His leadership, coaching and motivational qualities will be essential for us over the next eight games as we fight to secure our Premier League status.”
